It's easy to work out the width of a shelf or space if you allow 10'' (25cm) for a pair of shoes. In fact 10'' is a fairly generous width. You may find that 9 1/2'' (24cm) to be adequate. Another point you may want to consider is whether you want to accommodate boots and wellies. If yes, then the height of a shelf space will need to be considered. And finally, will you want to sit while you change?

Chair seat height is about 18'', so if you want to sit down on your shoe rack while putting on your shoes, keep 18'' in mind when designing your rack.

Shelf depth is 13'' as standard but can be less. A top will increase the depth to 14''

Plywood backs: if you require a plywood back (stained and polished) for your rack (where non is shown) add 5% to the cost of your rack.
